Self Defense -A Preventative Approach

Self Defense for Women Evolution Feb 5, 2011

Self Defense for Women Evolution Feb 5, 2011

I’m pleased to be hosting this event, Self Defense -A Preventative Approach for Women Evolution on February 5, 2011 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Please pass this information along to any woman you know about this important event. You can also save $10 when you use the code: women.

Here’s more information from the Women Evolution founder, Shavon Lindley:

“It seems as though every time I turn on the news there is another report of an assault on a local female. One of the most important ways we can empower ourselves is to learn how to protect ourselves and our families. In order to do so, we have decided to revisit the topic of Self-Defense with a much more hands on approach. We have enlisted the help of Mr. Tony Whetstine of Poway Samurai Martial Arts. Mr. Whetstine is the best of the best when it comes to Women specific self-defense! We will also be relocating to his facility in Poway for the day to ensure that there is plenty of room to punch, yell and kick! So be sure to share this with all your Poway, Scripps Ranch and Rancho Penasquitos friends! Read below for more information about Mr. Whetstine and his experience.

Although critical, physical defense should be the last defense. Dr. Rachelle Amini will be discussing tools and strategies to help tap into our most powerful resources: instinct and awareness. She has offered a preview of what she will discuss below. This promises to be a unique and powerful take on self-defense!

We’ve had a lot of exciting change here on the Women Evolution front…new location, new speakers, new take on an important topic! I feel empowered by our own evolution and am excited to share it with each of you. Sign-up today to ensure your space and please share this e-mail with all the important women in your life. Your Most Powerful Defensive Tools: Instinct & Awareness

On August 7, 2010 at 6:30 a.m., a 30-year-old woman was attacked from behind by a man while jogging not far from Balboa Park. The young woman screamed at full volume as the man jumped on to her in the middle of street. Thankfully, good Samaritans heard her screams and chased off the attacker before doing much more harm. The woman later told police that she had previously seen this same man on another recent jog.

Given that sexual assault takes place every 4 seconds in the U.S. (Dr. Van Zandt, 2009), ask yourself, what is the most significant piece of information in the above story? The woman had previously seen her attacker. Knowing that she had previously seen him, it begs the question, at first sight was there a moment she knew instinctively that something was wrong? Did the woman maybe think to herself, “he’s looking at me; I feel weird, stay further away from him?” As women, if we can learn to trust our instincts and take action based off of our innate reactions, we can prevent harmful situations from occurring in our environment.

As a US Marine Corps veteran of the Persian Gulf War, Mr. Whetstine has “real-world” experience that allows him to see the martial arts in a more complete perspective than just theoretical or competitive views.

Mr. Whetstine has 30 years of martial arts experience and teaches the Takamatsuden samurai and ninja arts and holds dan level rankings in both the Jinenkan and the Bujinkan federations.

This gives Mr. Whetstine an in-depth knowledge of both the historical and practical points of view. He used this experience to develop the Tools for Personal Safety™ Women course, which for ten years has helped provide women with simple effective principles and tools for avoiding and escaping dangerous situations.

Self Defense & Personal Safety Tools Class Now Scheduled for August 7

###

In the last 2 weeks, we’ve received a number of calls from women interested in taking the “Tools for Personal Safety – Women’s Only Self Defense” workshop. With that, we’ve scheduled a class on August 7, from 1 – 4pm.

Here’s a video clip of just one of the techniques women have learned in this workshop:

I demonstrate and teach the attendees how to escape, avoid, control, and evade dangerous situations that an jeopardize their safety. We also talk about awareness training such as: what to do if a stranger approaches asking for help, how to protect yourself in a parking lot and most importantly, how to avoid dangerous situations all together.

Don’t miss this important Women’s Safety and Self Defense class and please share this information with anyone you know: mother, sister, aunt, niece, grandmother, wife, daughter, friend, co-worker. They will be glad you did.

The “Tools for Personal Safety – Women’s only Self Defense” workshop will be held on August 7, 2010, from 1 – 4 pm at 13160 Poway Road (in the Library Plaza Shopping Center).

Don’t Forget Your Boys Need Protection Too

My Son Lee - Practing Seigan (Age 2)

My Son Lee - Practing Seigan (Age 2)

In light of the recent tragedies involving two young girls in our area, our inquiries about our martial arts and womens’ safety programs have been way up. Normally it takes my wife and I a good two months to get enough women to participate in one of our bi-annual womens’ safety classes. But, the last few months have seen the phone ringing quite a bit with concerns for women’s and girls’ safety.

As you can imagine, most of the calls are parents worried about their daughters. That’s not a bad thing but today I want to remind people not to forget their boys. There isn’t nearly the attention given to boys who go missing as girls. Boys can get hurt in this world too and all too often this can be over looked.

Boys who experience abuse many times to find a way to deal with it on their own, an inherited stigma of machismo. Sadly, all too often this only leads them to becoming abusers themselves or to harming themselves. It is a good thing to have our boys look out for others and to teach and encourage this. But, they are not men yet and they need to be protected and looked after too, just as girls do.

Let’s remember to love our sons, protect them, encourage them and help them learn to do the same when they are men. I know for me personally, my son always makes me think of working as hard as possible to be a better man and a better dad. I need to be the best role model for him I can be. What are you doing in your life to be a good role model?

I look forward to your comments.

Women’s Safety and Self Defense Class Series Ends Strong

###

Yesterday we held our last scheduled Women’s Tools for Personal Safety and Self Defense Class. Again I was glad that women who attended “learned more than they expected.” Some said, “I was expecting to learn to fight, but I am very glad I did not.” That is because our class is about techniques to help you escape and avoid dangerous situations, not how to beat someone up. No one can teach you to defend yourself in a one day class. Self defense takes months and years of training.

This year saw such a demand for Women’s Safety classes, and helping women become empowered with their personal safety is so rewarding for me to teach. I was also pleased to incorporate Sealed Mindset into the awareness portion of my class. For so long I felt like I was the only one out there pointing out the difference between Self Defense – learning a martial art and practicing it regularly, to Awareness and Tools for safety, which is what I teach in this particular class.

Lt. Lawrence Yatch, former Navy Seal with 11 years experience in special operations and his wife, Anne who holds a Masters in International Security, created SealedMindset.com to allow people to educate themselves, online and at their own pace, about personal safety. If you are interested in more information about their program, please visit sealedmindset.com and use coupon code PSMA for a $10 discount on their online lesson program. They even offer a free awareness test for you to try it out.

They are providing an in depth and valuable resource dedicated to personal safety and their expertise enhanced my curriculum of the Women’s Tools for Personal Safety class immeasurably!

Another student that what she remembers most from the class is to, “Be aware of your surroundings!” I couldn’t have said it better myself.

See Video Clips of Empowered Women from the Tools for Personal Safety Class

###

The Tools for Personal Safety Class on March 21st was a big success with 25 women in attendance. It was a pleasure to once again present the important tools to remain safe. I don’t like to call the class a “Self Defense” course because this goes far beyond that and no one can teach you how to fight off an experienced attacker in just 3 hours. For those very serious about Self Defense, they must take part in a regular martial arts program on an ongoing basis.

That being said we covered quite a few physical tools that compliment truly being aware of one’s surroundings. One comment from a woman who has trained in 4 martial arts systems was that she had never been exposed to these simple ideas before. I taught the women leverage techniques over fighting skills. These skills worked no matter the size or age of the woman, and the women left the class feeling empowered and in control of their personal safety.

Here’s a few video clips from the event.

How to Evade a Touch

How to Evade a Touch

The response to our March 21st Women’s Self Defense Class has been so great that we are opening up a second class on March 28th, 1 – 4pm because the first class is almost at capacity. Everywhere I go in Poway this week, I hear people talking about the recent Chelsea King incident. Parents are concerned for their children and women are concerned for their own personal safety.

The “Tools for Personal Safety – Women’s Only Self Defense” workshop has never been more important to learn than right now. I don’t know if you saw the recent article from March 1st in the Union Tribune about the attack on a jogger from December, but, it mentioned that the reason that girl was able to escape was due to her martial arts training that she had been doing since she was a kid.

If you’ve never considered taking martial arts classes before, you should definitely attend the Women’s Safety class on March 28th, and also seriously give some thought to signing up for regular weekly training. As it is with any skill, practice makes perfect and all the tools you will learn will be easier to implement in the heat of the moment, when you have practiced them before you need it. With regular martial arts training, your natural reflexes will take over and you will be able to perform the techniques without even thinking about it.

Women who attend the class on March 28th will learn physical self defense techniques as well as unique strategies to help them control, avoid, evade and escape dangerous situations. You will learn how to get away from being grabbed by the arm, from behind or even if you are pinned to the ground. In addition, you’ll learn how predators think so you can improve your awareness of your surroundings and avoid dangerous situations entirely.

The “Tools for Personal Safety – Women’s only Self Defense” workshop is March 28, 2010, from 1 – 4 pm. We are located at 13160 Poway Road (in the Library Plaza Shopping Center).

Fee: $30 per person. If you bring a friend, you can save $5 each!

Participants should wear comfortable clothes. Please call Tony for more information or with any questions #858-486-0059.

Self Defense & Personal Safety Tools Class for Women to be Held March 21

###

In light of the recent abduction of Chelsea King right here in our neighborhood of Poway/Rancho Bernardo, I’ve been getting a lot of calls from women in town who are concerned for their safety and that of their children. In response to this, I’m holding the “Tools for Personal Safety – Women’s Only Self Defense” workshop on March 21, from 1 – 4pm.

This class has never been more important to learn than right now. I’ll be showing the women who attend actual, physical self defense techniques as well as unique strategies that can help them in escaping, avoiding, controlling, and evading dangerous situations that can jeopardize their safety. This information is not available at any other martial arts school in Poway or San Diego and you do not need any previous self defense training to learn and use it right away.

Some of the techniques will show women how to escape if an attacker grabs them from behind, by the arm, or even if they have you pinned to the ground or held against your will. Yes, even if they are strattled on top of you, there is an escape move you can use to get away.

Also, we’ll cover tips women can use every day to increase their awareness of their surroundings. We’ll discuss what to do if a stranger approaches asking for help, how to protect yourself in the car and parking lot and most importantly, how to avoid dangerous situations all together.

Don’t miss this important Women’s Safety and Self Defense class and please share this information with anyone you know: mother, sister, aunt, niece, grandmother, wife, daughter, friend, co-worker. They will be glad you did.

The “Tools for Personal Safety – Women’s Only Self Defense” workshop will be held on March 21, 2010, from 1 – 4 pm at 13160 Poway Road (in the Library Plaza Shopping Center). NOTE We have opened up a 2nd class on March 28th because the class on the 21st is almost at capacity!

Fee: $30 per person. Those who bring a friend will save $5 per person.

Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothes. A limited number of sponsored spaces are also available to those who have previously been battered or abused. Please call Tony for more information on this valuable program at #858-486-0059.

Instructor Tony Whetstine Demonstrates How to Escape When an Attacker Grabs You From Behind

Instructor Tony Whetstine Demonstrates How to Escape When an Attacker Grabs You From Behind

A couple of times per year I offer a customized class for women that covers not only self defense tips but touches on some critical awareness tools and some of the most common and current methods used by predators. I call this class “Tools for Personal Safety for Women.”

This class is never more important than during the holiday season. It gets dark earlier and there are lots of shopping trips and very busy stores and malls. It is easy to get into a rush to go from one place to another or one store to another. That’s why it is important to recover some things you perhaps already know and learn some new tools to keep yourself and your children safe this holiday season.

This course is unique and will cover some tools that are not taught anywhere else and I have been told by past participants how useful and how different this course is from any other self defense course they have taken.

I always enjoy meeting people and getting good critical feedback on this course and am looking forward to teaching it again this December. Read this for more details on the “Tools for Personal Safety for Women” class and see testimonials from past students.
