The samurai of the sengoku jidai period of Japan were a major inspiration for the jidai-geki genre of Japanese films as well as the Jedi Knights™ of George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise. So much so that it is clear to see the connection from the historical term “jidai” and the modern fictional counterparts. You can find out more about the connection here.

Kids Sword Training

The lessons, methods and arts of these heroic warriors that inspired imaginations, from a long time ago all the way until now, are available to a select few kids, who wish to apply and interview for one of the openings (with their parents permission).

This is a referral only program with limited space, that is only available to students who truly wish to apply themselves to learning these teachings and not all kids will be eligible.

Students must be referred by current students or after taking a free introductory lesson with the sensei (instructor).

This class meets once a week on Thursdays at 6pm for ages 6 – 16. Space is extremely limited.

This is a weapons class. Kids will train with a “soft” sword. Equipment fees apply.

Wow, the last year has gone by fast! With that, it is time to turn our focus to a new sword school. We have been studying the sword work of the Kukishinden for the past year touching on the first scroll of the school in great depth. Those that have been with us for much of that year have blossomed beyond my wildest expectations. Having studied the “samurai” sword work for the past couple of years at Poway Samurai Martial Arts, we are now turning our attention to the sword work of the often misunderstood “ninja”.

Starting on August 4th, 2009, we will be spending the next few months studying the basics of the Togakure Ryu school’s “ninja” sword work to familiarize students with the understanding of its fundamentals and how it was used against “samurai” sword work. This is a rare opportunity to learn a historically accurate aspect of “ninja” training with the same kata taken directly from the scrolls the Tokagure Ryu Ninjutsu practioners used for hundreds of years. If you are sword enthusiast, samurai enthusiast, ninjutsu enthusiast or someone who wants to experience authentic ninjutsu training in the San Diego area, now is a rare opportunity to learn some material we will not cover again for two or three years!

There are many aspects to consider. For the sake of brevity I’ll explore only one. The sword of no sword I’ll call it. Doesn’t that sound great? Some fantastic mystical secret I am about to impart? Hardly! The sword is a reflection of the person practicing. The absolute commitment and attention required to handling the weapon properly, the total focus and dedication required to understanding it. There is no time to think about the pile of work waiting on your desk at the office the next day, the stack of bills that need to be paid, or the groceries that need to be purchased.

Learning to use the sword isn’t about the sword at all. It is about turning one’s attention to something else. Early on, perhaps it is simply a nice stress reliever to get away from the daily routine. Then growing from there into the ability to have a greater awareness of one’s goals or purpose, and better focus to achieve those goals. Having greater awareness about ourselves and those around us so we can know when to say that kind thing we’ve wanted to say but haven’t or give that compliment we’ve been meaning to but never have.

As we get ready for our day (or evening for that matter if we are going out) we groom ourselves make certain our clothes are cleaned and pressed and our shoes are shined. The sword of no sword is about keeping ourselves and our hearts polished and sharp, our minds and spirits clear and pointedly focused towards our purpose.

The way of the sword is the sword pointing the way.
